Hello from Långbacken
My name is Renee and I have lived at the foot of the long hill since 2009. I did not know what I was letting myself in for! I arrived here on Midsummers Eve with a 20 foot removal lorry from Denmark, and lots of friends to help me.
Good job the sun did not set because we did not sleep that night.

I had decided to go into sort off "semi retirement" After years of working with children I had decided to realise my dream of living closer to nature and being more self sufficient. I brought with me my horses, my dogs, and purchased a small flock of sheep.
I had lived in Denmark for over 30 years but had now moved further north into Sweden. 700 miles further north - a new language, a new culture, a new climate. The sun doesn't set for a couple of months in the summer whilst in the mid- winter we only have about 5 hours daylight.
The first winter was a trial. So many things were new to me. Six  months of winter with four feet of snow and temperatures down to -40 degrees F.

The winter landscape is for me, paradise on earth.

During the short days I was out and about feeding my livestock, thawing out water buckets and bringing in wood to keep myself warm during the long, dark winter evenings.

These evenings were spent spinning, knitting or keeping contact with friends through the internet. New acquaintances were made and these have now led to me opening the door to my house below the long hill
